Day 5/30:
While on the road together, Holly and I spent two weeks on a work exchange at the Huon Bush Retreats in Huon Valley, Tasmania.
In exchange for 4-6hrs of work every day, we were supplemented with food to eat and a place to sleep.
The above photo is of our sleeping arrangements
An unpowered (and thus unHEATED) caravan in the middle of the rainforest of Mt. Misery (yes, that’s really what it’s called)
as the nights dropped down to something that translates roughly to 32℉, Holly and I insulated ourselves in layers of underarmour and long johns and nestled our bodies inside fully zipped sleeping bags, duvets, and blankets, and took turns being angry at the world and laughing hysterically (really, out of hysteria) about the insanity of the situation that we were in.
We would spend days installing insulation, digging holes, or felling trees out in the forest, and then come “home” to sleep in this tin can. Totally alienated from the rest of the world, but totally together.
As challenging as it was, we reached some pretty serious breaking points in that tin can, as well as throughout the entire trip, and we still came out on the other side, smiling. And nothing and no one will ever be able to take that away from us.
Our relationship is stronger for it and, I, for one, think I am, too
PLUS, I now know how to properly empty a compost toilet so…there’s that!
